It is a further development of electrophoresisand a powerful separation technique using a discontinuous electrical field to create sharp boundaries between the sample constituents. In this chapter the basic background including theory, instruments, analysis is presented. Authors do not forget the miniaturization of isotachophoresis.
Isotachophoresis shows its superiority to conventional separation techniques when the maximum resolution is achieved with the latter. The choice of the experimental parameters remains complex but is very rewarding when successful. In water or wastewater samples no sample pretreatment or only filtration is required before analysis.
In analysis of solid samples soils, sediments before analysis, extraction techniques are necessary. Thanks to its low cost and high rate isotachophoresis could be useful in routine analysis.
